as i've mentioned before, our house is 700sq ft. i realize there are people who live in smaller places and probably think 700 is HUGE but we moved from a 2200sq ft house to this tiny thing and it's a big difference. it's been almost six months here and i feel like i've finally got it figured out. i still hate it a lot of the time but dayummm los angeles is expensive and we really enjoy living in this area so we traded space for location.
get rid of everything. okay, maybe not every single thing but most things. a lot of things. anything that you can't live without should not be in your home. in such a small place you need to love everything you have or you'll just think of it as junk and a space hog.
have a place for everything. once you've paired down your belongings to just those that you can't live without, every single thing should have a place. even my coffee mugs have a place within the cabinet. a specific order to them. having that kind of order in a home really makes it flow better.
contain clutter. with kids, even when you have a place for everything, most times it will not make it in to those places. so we have buckets and baskets all around the house to corral lost items. a bucket by the door is for shoes and the diaper bag. three boxes in the nursery house all the toys. a basket by the desk is for miscellaneous papers and magazines before they get filed away in the proper place.
think outside the box. or, rather, inside. my coffee table is a big wicker basket that also doubles as a linen closet. the space under the bassinet is for burp cloths, blankets and bibs. you have to be creative with your furniture and space with a small house. the kids' dressers are in their closet because, what baby needs an entire closet?
think vertically. those dressers in the kids' closet? they're stacked on top of each other. it gives us a ton more room to work with and space for all of william's big toys. a tall and skinny bookshelf or two is great for holding not only books, but other nick-knacks that you saved from the purge. i have a box full of nail polish, candles and photos on our bookshelf including our printer.
